~ILLUSTRATING BEAUTIFUL STORIES~
In all my illustration work I strive to reflect life in vibrant and expressive paintings and drawings with the purpose of animating and illuminating the brilliant writing of the author I collaborate with. I use watercolor, gouache, pencil, ink and mixed-media to achieve bright eye-catching illustrations. My work in children's books always has the element of surprise in it, as I enjoy adding small but very significant details to the artwork, that may not be seen at first sight. So every time a reader or viewer sees the illustrations they will find something new. My love for nature will always peak through my work in organic elements and plant/ animal life. |

THE SERIES
Author: Deedee Cummings
Illustrator: Charlene Mosley
2020-23
Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess is a heartwarming story about family, role models, dreams, and discovering a determination for growth. This five-part diverse picture book series shines the spotlight on a little Brown girl who loves musical theatre and never lets anything get in the way of her dreams. It seems that everyone else has an idea for who she should be, but in the end, she discovers that she is the one who gets to decide.
The story also reveals the very special family dynamic that Kayla shares with her mom- a hard-working woman who struggles with the guilt of not being as available for her young daughter as she would like. But as the story progresses, Kayla and her mom realize the impact of valuing the time they have together as well as the importance of seeing each other acknowledge (and pursue) their individual dreams. -MakeAWayMedia.com

AMAZON REVIEWS:
A great book for families!

I enjoyed the book because it was whimsical, but it still told a real story. It highlighted the positive relationship between a mother and her daughter. The illustrations were wonderful and unique. The pages really pop with color. As a school teacher, this will be added to my library because it is different than other "princess" books. Children will get to see diversity represented in one of our library books and that is always important. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!

I read this book to my sons and we all enjoyed it from start to finish! The story is one that doesn’t only resonate with “princesses” but the with “princes” just the same with the themes of determination, strength, and family values. The illustrations are beautiful and draw you into the story. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

BLACK JOY: A HEALTHY CONVERSTAION ABOUT RACE
Author: Bedford Palmer
Illustrator: Charlene Mosley
2021
|
While watching a Black Lives Matter protest on the news, Joy notices that her parents are wearing the same t-shirts as the protesters. She looks at her father and asks, "Daddy, why are we Black when our skin is brown?" This question sparks a family conversation where Joy's father explains the origins of race, as the family is transported into the protest march, and they walk through their community looking at the murals that they pass. Black Joy: A healthy conversation about race is a follow-up to "Daddy Why Am I Brown?" A healthy conversation about skin color and family. We pick up two years after Joy talks to her dad about skin color. Through Black Joy, we continue that conversation by directly addressing the concept of race from an age-appropriate perspective. Joy learns about the social rationale for inventing the idea of race. She also learns why it is important for Blackness to be transformed from a sign of oppression to an identity built of strength and resilience. |

Overview DEAR DANGER is about a young woman who is reacquainted with an old friend, new flame, and the progression of their non-traditional relationship. It’s about finding an impossible love, but not restraining it, putting it into a small box, putting a little label on the box, and locking the contents away to never grow beyond the confines of the box. It’s about being bigger than our earthly bodies. It’s about giving all you can possibly exhaust and asking nothing in return. But, mostly, it’s about belonging to no one and nothing and simply belonging to ourselves. DEAR DANGER is personal and intimate. It’s two halves of a love story. One part love for someone else that is so unconventional that it must be other-worldly and one part a great love for oneself. *FIND THE BOOK ILLUSTRATED IN MINIMALISM LINE DRAWINGS by CHARLENE MOSLEY. |
