The Aura Of Becoming
EMBRACE YOUR INNER WILD
Charlene Mosley’s current series explores the quiet, persistent resilience found in both nature and the human spirit. She seeks to portray the instinct to endure, to adapt, and to survive. Through vibrant, textural oil paintings, bright and fluid watercolors, and intricately expressive drawings, Mosley visualizes the wild within us all that we were born with but somehow are taught to tame as we mature. As children we are uninhibited, curious, and wild and as we age, we learn to “behave” and leave these attributes locked up inside to reach societal expectations and to fit the societal norms. But by doing so, the artist asks the viewer, do we lose our inner wild and Self? Intertwining human forms with elements of untamed wildlife and organic plant shapes, the artist wants to reveal a connection to the emotional undercurrents that connect us to the natural world. Bold hues and layered textures reflect both inner strength and raw vulnerability.
Pollinators seen as fragile, like butterflies or hummingbirds, appear throughout her work not only as symbols of delicate beauty, but of astonishing endurance and resilience. A Monarch butterfly, a seemingly ephemeral creature, survives a 1 in 10% chance of getting from caterpillar to cocoon, travels thousands of miles of migration across the highest mountain ranges, amidst often hostile environments. A perfect reflection of survival against all odds. Wild animals such as tigers, are a symbol of inner courage, strength and adventure. Snakes are a symbol of taking risk and shedding an old self to adapt and flourish into something bigger. These creatures become metaphors for the hidden resilience we all carry, the instincts we suppress, and the wild beauty we often forget exists within us.
Charlene Mosley invites viewers to activate and embrace their inner wild and emphasizes the importance of the balance between inward looking and outward living; to live your truest self and connect back to it. She parallels this with her subjects of whom mostly are women of color. Mosley wants to create and saturate a space in galleries and museums with especially women of color to celebrate their existence, excellence and enduring, resilient spirits as they have historically been, and continue to be, essential trailblazers, activists, and leaders around the world, often overcoming systemic barriers to shape history.

Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you:
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.
Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I:
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.
